PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical Education develops students’ competence and confidence to take part in a range of physical activities that become a central part of their lives, both in and out of school. A high-quality PE curriculum enables all students to enjoy and succeed in many kinds of physical activity. They develop a wide range of skills and the ability to use tactics, strategies and compositional ideas to perform successfully. When they are performing, they think about what they are doing, analyse the situation and make decisions. They also reflect on their own and others’ performances and find ways to improve them” National Curriculum.

AIMS OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

PE in the school aims at a harmonious balance between enjoyment, all-round exercise, the development of the body and the acquisition of skills.

PE is concerned with the uniqueness of the individual and the development of children as people.

PE is not simply a time to “let off steam”, “the mind remains in the classroom whilst the body goes out to play”. This is not so.

Such a view acknowledges no responsibility on the part of the PE teacher to structure situations in such a way that the child “is initiated into the content of the activity or forms of knowledge in a meaningful way so that he knows what he is doing”.

The understanding of games and sport is clarified by participation, observation and appreciation. Students should discover pleasure, enjoyment and satisfaction in PE through worthwhile participation and purposeful effort.

Extra Curricular Activities – Lunchtime

We have an extensive Intra-school sporting programme. Throughout the week we have numerous activities taking place during lunchtime. Sports such as Table Tennis, Basketball, Badminton, Football and Cricket are extremely popular with both girls and boys from all years. We are also delighted to have high quality sports coaches coming in to the school to give specialist coaching and tips to any student who wishes to take part in Basketball and Badminton.

Furthermore, we also run an extremely popular inter-form sporting programme. This consists of sports such as: Netball, Dodgeball, 5-a-side Football, Badminton, Indoor Kurling, Kwik Cricket, Softball, Hockey, Volleyball and Benchball. This gives students the opportunity to participate in a fun, but slightly competitive environment, at sports which they might not normally have the chance to try.
