SSCO

On receiving and analysing the PESSYP surveys in September 2009 Action Plans were produced for the 4 Primary Schools in the St Martin’s SSCo Family – as well as one for our own school, and discussed in detail with each PLT the reasoning behind the aims and targets for their school. Following our discussions any amendments were made and the Action Plans implemented.

We then identified festivals which would provide the most suitable challenges, enjoyment and learning environment for our Primary school pupils. Four such festivals were organised to take place before Christmas, three of which would be based at St. Martin’s:

Tri Golf (Years 3 & 4)
Cross Country (Yrs 3, 4,5 & 6
Seven a side Football (Yrs 5 & 6)

In delivering all three festivals it was vital to utilise the expertise of our year 9 Young Leaders here at St. Martins.

The Tri Golf was the most “labour intensive” festival requiring twenty leaders. They worked tirelessly and harmoniously throughout the course of the morning officiating and assisting over 100 keen young pupils from our visiting Primary Schools.

I was delighted with the leaders’ efficient, friendly and professional approach to their tasks which helped encourage some fantastic, high quality performances from the young learners.

St. Martin’s Young Leaders were also “employed” at the Cross Country /Fun Run event and also at the 7-a-side Football festival.

At the Cross Country event over 120 Primary pupils took part on a beautiful sunny October morning and with many excited parents and staff watching, the event was a great success.

Our final festival before Christmas was the Multi-skills event based at William Bradford Community College. This festival targeted the Year 2 pupils who had been identified from the PESSYP survey. On this occasion the expertise of Year 10 & 11 leaders from William Bradford was utilised, thus providing them with opportunity to support the event and deliver their leadership skills.

Almost 80 Year 2 pupils attended the festival and thoroughly enjoyed and learnt from their participation. The William Bradford Leaders were once more superb in their delivery and played a huge role in the festival being a great success.

Lunch time play (Huff n Puff) is an essential tool for facilitating calmer yet more active purposeful lunch times in our Primary schools. The Lunch time Supervisors and Year 5/6 Leaders have been trained in those schools who have needed assistance and/or the retraining of staff and pupils. Eddy Fincham – based at Richmond has delivered the training.

Our SSCo has coordinated pre- school Breakfast Clubs to deliver Fencing and Multi-skill activities in two of our Primary Schools. This has included liaising with schools and Extended Services co-ordinators.

With the help of the Assistant PDM we have organised the delivery of Table Tennis to enhance the three hour activity hour at another of our Primary Schools commencing April 2010.

The SSCo has, as part of the Competition Strand, worked with the Competition Manager on producing a Sports Unlimited bid for Inclusive Competitions Coaching in Primary and High schools. The bid has targeted pupils with physical, mental or social disabilities. At present up to 12 Primary schools and 2 High schools have expressed a desire and therefore have been included in the bid. This will massively assist and provide quality coaching in the target schools.

At St Martins we have co-ordinated the delivery of OSHL in Fencing, Golf and Street Dance. These new areas of activity have proved very popular with a hard core of dedicated learners. This has involved liaising with SSP and external coaches to ensure effective delivery and future pathways.

As part of the school Enrichment Programme our SSCo has overseen the delivery of a Young Leaders programme which has been delivered by our Sports Technician and a member of the SLT. The rolling programme will eventually give all pupils an insight of and valuable experience in leading sporting activities. This gives Year 9 pupils the necessary skills and confidence to apply for and become Year 9 Sports Leaders.

We have continued to organise Interform competition which takes place at lunch times as part of our Intra School Sport Delivery. This gives the pupils the opportunity to take part in active lunch times in a range of sporting activities which include 5-a-side football, netball, table tennis, bench ball, badminton and even indoor curling. The range of activities caters for the interest of many pupils and this year were aiming for at least 80% involvement figures.

Our SSCo has also co-ordinated the participation of girls and boys teams in Inter SSP competitions including Girls football, Boys & Girls Table tennis and Boys Cricket. We also have pupils included in SSP Hockey and Table Tennis squads.

In December our SSCo jointly co-ordinated and delivered the SSP Sports Hall Athletics festival for Years 7 & 8 at Hinckley Leisure Centre in which approx. 160 pupils took part. This involved liaising with KS4 SSCos and staff to use their Sports Leaders to help officiate at the event which was a great success.

Our SSCo has also worked with the Assistant PDM, Extended Services co-ordinators and Head teachers to construct an SSP Inter School Coaching Programme for 2010-11. This will involve the delivery of Basket Ball, Table Tennis and Badminton to approx. 190 pupils at our school over the course of the year. The cost of the coaching is to be match funded by the SSP. The programme will deliver top quality coaching in three areas of activity at fantastic value.
